Unexpected Deaths In A Care Home Or Similar Setting

  • For unexpected deaths, emergency services must be involved. They inform the coroner who will investigate the cause of death.
  • The coroner arranges for a local funeral director to collect the person; the deceased is then taken to the hospital mortuary.
  • You are not obliged to use the same funeral director, even if the person has been transferred to another funeral home. You are free to choose your own funeral director.
  • The coroner issues a medical certificate stating the cause of death after the investigation. You are free to arrange the funeral while this is happening.
  • Contact Thomas Furber to start the funeral arrangements or discuss a Funeral Plan; however, the date of the funeral cannot be set until the coroner has completed their investigations. We will help you step by step through this process.

How To Register A Death

Funeral Home
Important Updates 2023
  1. If the death has been reported to a coroner, you CANNOT register the death until the coroner has given permission.
  2. The death must be registered within 5 days at the Registrar's Office local to where the death took place. If you can’t get there, or have problems doing so, please contact the registrar as soon as possible.
  3. Contact the Registrar's Office as soon as possible to make an appointment. This will limit your waiting time. *
  4. Check the availability of the registrar and whether you need someone to accompany you. In some cases, someone other than you may need to give the required information to register the death.
  5. If the death has been referred to the coroner, it cannot be registered until the registrar has received authority from the coroner. You will be notified by H. M. Coroner when to attend the Register Office.
  6. The information for registration may be given to any registrar in England and Wales. You will need to attend your chosen registrar’s office to make a declaration of the particulars of the deceased. **
  7. This declaration is then forwarded to the registrar for the sub-district where the death took place. It is then registered there. N.B. This may delay the issue of the certificates and setting the funeral date. **

 * Due to COVID-19, you will need to make an appointment for the Registrar to contact you to register the death.

** Due to COVID-19, the Medical Certificate will be emailed directly to the Registrar, and the Registration is now face-to-face. Some Registrars' only accept Debit/Credit cards for payment, cash may not be accepted.
